The motto for Bridgnorth motocross club should be "GO FOR IT" (03/03/06)
When members turned up at the Buildwas track on Saturday to prepare for
Sunday's Motocross meeting they found three inches of mud in the area around
the entrance to the paddock and parking field. Cancellation was briefly
considered but they decided "to go for it" and with the help of four
tractors, towed all vehicles up to higher ground which was drier so that
the event could go ahead as scheduled.
On Sunday morning around 170 competitors were towed in, which took three
hours, but although a late start was inevitable, riders were still able
to contest three races in each class a per programme, finishing on the deadline
of 6pm. By this time a brisk breeze had dried the surface allowing an easy
downhill exit.
The track had been scuffled and rolled on Saturday morning and was in surprisingly
good condition for racing.
Graham Gatt Trophy
The highlight of Sunday's racing for Bridgnorth clubmen was competition
for the Graham Gatt Trophy that went to the day's top scorer. The inter-juniors
provided the main contestants for the top price and in the first moto it
was Karl Haycock ( 11) and Josh Bailey (12) who had a race-long tussle for
the lead which saw Haycock win by a whisker.
The second race again saw the pair in the thick of the action at the head
of the field which ended with Haycock second and Bailey fourth.
Meanwhile in the unlimited juniors a family affair saw Dave Booton take
the lead from son-in-law Stuart Brown who joked later he was careful not
to "knock off the old chap" when he briefly took the lead. At the end of
the race Booton was second and Brown seventh. Race two saw Booton finish
third to remain in the reckoning for the day's top trophy. Although contesting
his first event of the season showed everyone the way in his final outing
to bag a fine win which clinched the overall second prize in his class.
This meant Haycock had to finish in the top two to better the 37 point tally
of Booton. A good start in the final moto saw a three way tussle involving
Haycock, Conner Flavell of Clee Hill and Bailey who unfortunately jarred
a knee and dropped to fifth. Haycock won his battle with Flavell for his
second win that clinched the overall first prize in the inter-juniors and
the Graham Gatt Trophy for 2006 and Bailey just missed the overall third
by one point.
